Iranian nationalism is among the strongest of any other country, such that they would go to great lengths to protect their religious ways (ISIS wants to wipe out Shia). Shia started in Iran and stayed there for thousands of years. It’d be like if terrorists wanted to destroy Mount Rushmore or the White House, you’d do anything to protect it.
